Abstract
During the last years, many researches have been developed regarding a hypothetical system of overdeveloped perception that homosexual men could have: the gaydar. The present Final Master’s Project investigates the startup of this perceptive mechanism, as curious as controversial, which hadn’t been examined in the Spanish population before. In this study a further step is taken as this perceptive quality is related to mental opening and attitudes towards gay people, two variables that already correlate. Under a quantitative research design, this project includes 20 «model» subjects and 472 experimental subjects, all of them men, of diverse desire orientation and origin. With the use of photographic and videographic material, on the one hand, and a battery made up of the Stimuli inventory, the NEO PI-R Mental Openness subscale and the MHS Attitudes towards gays, on the other hand, the following conclusions were obtained: the perception of the sexual orientation of gay men is higher than that of heterosexual men, yielding statistically significant results, while neither mental opening nor attitudes towards gay people seem to have an apparent relationship with perceptual quality. Even though not everything that was hypothesized was fulfilled, it seems that this skillful vision, that we could call gaydar, would exist as long as we conceive it as the result of psychosocial processes, such as learning, habituation, practice, comparisons, need for socialization and other factors that this study brings together and highlights.
