Abstract

Breast cancer is the most frequent neoplasm among women in today’s society, implying a significant change in the life projects of people living as well as in their immediate environment. Relevant aspects such as: physical appearance, self-esteem, psychological well-being or interpersonal relationships may be affected by the disease and its treatments. This research study is carried out with the aim of analyzing how variables such as body image or self-esteem impact the sexual experiencies and enjoyment of the sexuality of survivors with breast cancer. While always considering the need to study and contemplate the incidence of other factors related to the cited variables such as the type of surgery undertaken or the age of the person affected. To do this, we have a sample of 27 Spanish women survivors of breast cancer between the ages of 30 and 63 years. The evaluation instruments were: Initial recognition questionnaire with sociodemographic data, Body Image Scale (BIS), Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (RSES) and the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The results reveal that the alterations in body image and self-esteem are not related to the type of surgery, nor with age. Although, a higher percentage of mastectomized women take in consideration the perception of their body image to a higher degree, impacting their self esteem. Based on the analyzed data, it is possible to suggest that body image and self-esteem are influential factors in the following factors of the sexual sphere: excitation, lubrication, orgasm and satisfaction.

Key words: Breast cancer, self-esteem, body image, sexuality.
